WHAT DO PICTURES WANT?

Animated Documentary Film | 2min 18sec | HD 4:3 | Stereo

In this self-reflective and experimental film, inspired by a quote from W.J.T. Mitchell’s book “What Do Pictures Want”,the artist embarks on a unique experiment to either debunk or validate Mitchell’s assertion that “Everyone knows that a photograph of their mother is not alive, but they will still be reluctant to deface or destroy it.” Selecting portraits of his parents, Reis prints and scratches into 24 copies of each image. Once animated, these scratched images turn into a light-hearted and nostalgic animated ode, capturing the essence of the artist’s parents’ younger selves while questioning the emotional resonance embedded in the act of artistic disfiguration.
